The Top 5 operas played in the World

The website operabase.com provides interesting statistics and data on the world of opera, which is worth pondering.

Let's discover the Top 5 of the most played operas in the world. Italy dominates the charts maintaining its fundamental operatic tradition. Data refer to the 2017-2018 period.

  1. Verdi - LA TRAVIATA

The most played opera in the world with 871 performances in the analyzed period. The top of mind, it could be considered as the true emblem of the opera.

  1. Bizet - CARMEN

Second place for this splendid French opera (700 performances).

  1. Mozart -  THE MAGIC FLUTE (DIE ZAUBERFLOTE)

Mozart’s opera in two acts is in third place (667 performances).

  1. Puccini - LA BOHÈME

Another Italian in this Top 5 and another masterpiece of the opera scene, with 604 performances.

  1. Puccini - TOSCA

In fifth place with 553 performances we find Puccini again with one of the most popular operas.

The statistics show other interesting data: the composer with the highest number of performances, in the period 2017-2018, is Giuseppe Verdi with 3.499 performances; second and third place for Mozart (2.357 performances) and Puccini (2.313 performances). Although with fewer representations Rossini and Donizetti are in the top 5 of the most played composers in the world.

Then we come to the all-Italian paradox: Italian composers dominate the charts but in the Top 20 of the cities with the largest number of opera performances there is only one Italian city, Milan at position 20.
