Farewell to Mirella Freni, exceptional soprano and friend of Big Luciano

The soprano Mirella Freni, who died recently due to a long illness, would have turned 85 on February 27, 2020.

Mirella Freni was one of the most beautiful voices in the world of opera, the same age and fellow citizen of Luciano Pavarotti. They had known each other since childhood.

The singer made her debut on February 3, 1955 with the role of Micaela in Carmen, at the municipal theater of Modena. From that moment on, her performances began in theaters around the world: La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan in New York, the Paris Opera, the Bolshoy in Moscow, Covent Garden in London, the Staatsoper in Vienna, the Salzburg Festspielhaus, the Colon of Buenos Aires, the Washington Opera, the Tokyo National Theater, to name just a few.

Luciano Pavarotti, speaking of Mirella Freni, replied with a famous joke: "We did everything together, except making love!". Mirella Freni, in an 2013 interview, said: "Yes this is true. We were always together and many believed that we had a relationship. But no, he was a brother to me. It was a great pain when he died. I was close to him until four days before, then I realized that the end was coming and I couldn't take it anymore.  I can imagine him up there making fun of me."
